And Single Handed Long Distance Sailingwith John Apps

John has completed several Jester Challenges to the United States and Azores.

He will talk about why some people will put up with discomfort, poor food, interrupted sleep, extreme weather, inexplicable breakages and loneliness, to sail the oceans of the world by themselves in small boats.

Single handed ocean sailing has been described as 99% boredom with occasional terror, panic and moments of splendour.

John will give us examples of all of them!

John has three Jester Challengers to Newport Rhode Island and three Jester Azores Challenges under his belt.

After breaking his starboard lower shroud in 2006 off Newfoundland he sailed back to the UK on a single tack (Port) of 2,300 miles, thanks to a consistent NW wind. He completed the 2021 Jester Azores in his 1966 Invicta Mk1 Arelia.
