In The Andes, 12,500 feet above sea level, may not seem like the most obvious location for a story about a steamship, but boats are needed on Lake Titicaca, the World’s highest navigable waterway. Building a boat in the UK, dismantling it and shipping it to South America to be re-built, sounds an unlikely starting point, but that was how the Yavari began. After many years of service on the lake, the Yavari eventually fell into disrepair, until found by Meriel Larken, who had a family connection to one of the original builders.

Meriel began the major project of restoring and rebuilding the Yavari, and shared the fascinating tale of her progress.
