In a change from the traditional format of winter talks, the year began with film night. The movie selected was Maiden, the story of Tracy Edwards’ beginnings as a sailor and progression to skipper an all-female crew around the world.
The film documented the extraordinary challenge just to reach the start-line for the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race. It was a sport heavily dominated by men, and Tracy struggled to be taken seriously. She wasn’t somebody to be deterred, whatever the obstacles put in her way.
Although Maiden wasn’t expected to finish even the first leg, the team performed far beyond expectations. The sailing world were quickly forced to review their opinions, as Maiden’s improving performance stunned everybody.
It was a truly fascinating documentary, and well worthy of watching.
