Bob has sailed since his early teens, starting in Mirror dinghies and Larks, before progressing to offshore sailing on his parents’ classic yacht in Scotland. He served in the Royal Engineers, qualifying as an RYA Ocean Yachtmaster and Offshore Instructor, and sailed extensively worldwide, including the 1979 Fastnet Race and a transatlantic crossing.
In 2009 he bought Rosinis, his Rustler 36, having already sailed 20,000 nautical miles. Now retired, he has added over 32,000 more miles, many of them solo on long blue-water passages.
Although he never planned to sail so much single-handed, finding suitable crew proved difficult, so he embraced solo sailing and now thoroughly enjoys the challenge and solitude.
A long-standing member of Marchwood Yacht Club and former Honorary Rear Commodore of the Royal Engineer Yacht Club, Bob was recently elected to the Royal Cruising Club.
Sailing to the Faroe Islands had been a long-held ambition. In 2023 he finally made the voyage, with the legs from and to Stornoway sailed partly solo and partly crewed. His talk focuses on the spectacular Faroe Islands, their dramatic scenery, and challenging tides.
